All About Play Therapy
Healing through play
When adults are worried or facing difficulties they tend to use words to work through their problems. It is much easier for children to use the language of play.
Children do not typically have the thinking and verbal skills to be able to articulate their emotional experiences. As children grow their language becomes more advanced. However, throughout childhood they usually express themselves much more fully through play.
In play therapy the child can explore their thoughts and feelings through play and creative art materials, making sense of what they are feeling and 'showing' it to the therapist . The child can express themselves in whatever way they feel comfortable, at their own pace.
I provide a safe and confidential space for each child to explore and resolve their difficulties. This is facilitated through the formation of a warm, accepting and trusting relationship between the child and I.
The child leads the play and I follow.. During play therapy children create play that represents the troubling experiences they are struggling with internally. The play is facilitated by me to promote emotional healing.
The play therapy toolkit includes art, clay, music, sand tray, movement, puppets, therapeutic storytelling, drama and role-play .
